The 2023 BMW X1 made its global debut over a month ago. The X1 has always been one of the most curious options in the German luxury brand’s lineup. BMW likes to differentiate itself from the rest of the SUV playing field by dubbing the X1 as an “SAV”

The 2023 X1 is the smallest offering in BMW’s SAV lineup. Yet, this latest model is still wider, taller, and longer than its predecessor. The new angular styling is as polarizing as ever. But, BMW holds back from doubling the size of the kidney grills as seen on other newer models. 2023 BMW X1 PERFORMANCE AND CAPABILITY

While the B48 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine has powered the X1 chassis since 2016, the engine is revamped for the new generation. Now with both more power and higher efficiency than the previous iteration, this platform, beginning with the N20 four-cylinder turbo engine back in 2011, has had over a decade of refinement under its belt.

Placed with the difficult task of replacing BMW’s signature silky smooth inline-six engines for low-end models, the turbo-four may not sound as good or feel as slick, but makes up for it with massive torque along with better gas mileage.

At about 3,750-pound curb weight, the X1 xDrive 28i is well-weighted within its class, allowing 241 horsepower to feel healthy under your foot, but not particularly fast compared to BMW’s inline-six turbo offerings. Yet, the efficiency of the twin-scroll single turbo makes the B48 engine shine, providing 295 pound-feet of torque starting at 1,500 RPM.

Expect low-speed cruising to be butter smooth, with the low-RPM torque providing both passing power and drivability without having to ring it out. When you do put your foot to the floor, the torque is immediate and strong into the higher RPMs, with peak horsepower at 6,500 RPM.

The most interesting performance aspect of the new third-generation X1 is the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. You will seldom find another vehicle in this segment offering any form of transmission outside of an automatic. The DCT, which debuted back in 2008 and offered exclusively on BMW M models, has now found its way into a base model X1.

That is the definition of trickle-down engineering. With over a decade of refinement, the seven-speed DCT is one of the best performance transmissions available in any vehicle. Shifts are lightning fast with new tuning and a wider gear ratio allowing the transmission to adapt according to the driving environment to optimize efficiency.

With BMW xDrive standard with every X1 model, prospective buyers will be happy to know that the X1 excels in tougher road and weather conditions. With the handling and driving experience of motorsport-bred BMWs along with off-roading capability, the X1 embodies what BMW wants to represent as an SAV.

Being the smallest and most nimble vehicle in the BMW SAV lineup, the 2023 X1 is the closest experience to a performance sedan/coupe available. While still unreleased, the fuel economy average should be close to or better than the previous 2022 year, with an estimated 23 MPG City and 31 MPG Highway.

BMW’s latest generation styling is a topic of hot debate amongst aficionados of the BMW brand. The X1 has always had attractive and sporty proportions. Customers will be able to select from over 13 different paint finishes, with standard 18-inch wheels available in five different styles. INTERIOR QUALITY AND TECHNOLOGY

The 2023 BMW X1 has grown in size and the larger external dimensions have benefited the interior space by providing the driver and front passenger with increased shoulder and elbow room. A sleek and stylish interior that displays luxury at every touch point is customizable to your heart’s content. With five different trim finishes and six different upholstery options, a completely personalized cabin is achievable.

The beautiful BMW Curved Display features the latest version of BMW’s iDrive. It is the centerpiece of the entire interior, the near 21-inch long Curved Display serves as the one-stop option for both infotainment and the driver’s tools. The central floating central armrest creates a good sense of openness through the cabin with customizable illumination options available through the display.

While BMW still holds out on providing the option of Apple Carplay or Android Auto, the BMW infotainment system is still one of the best available. The great visibility from the large front glass can be further enhanced by the optional panoramic glass sunroof to create a spacious cabin.

Redesigned seats are available for the 2023 model year, whether selecting the standard seats or the optional sports seats. Both provide increased comfort and adjustability within the cabin compared to the previous generation.

Using the Bavarian automaker's Build Your Own feature on their website, the cheapest we were able to option an available 2023 BMW sDrive28i model was at $37,800 plus a $995 destination charge. More specific niceties and features will definitely bump that above the $40,000 range. Compared to its primary German luxury rivals, the 2023 X1 is not the cheapest, but still within the average price range for the segment.

MAIN COMPETITION

The BMW X1 is not alone in its segment and other brands do offer alternate options. If the most important aspect of your driving experience is handling, the 2023 X1 should be at the top of your list. If you aren’t sold on the quirky aesthetic or drivability, other options like the Lexus NX, Mercedes Benz GLA, and Audi Q3 should fill in the gaps.

The only other driver-focused SAV comparable to the X1 will be the Jaguar E-Pace, although it offers less torque and comes in at a higher price of $48,000 base. Thus, if a sporty driving experience is a necessity whilst retaining comfort, adaptability, and luxury, the 2023 BMW X1 is a top choice.
