The power light of your laptop can turn on while the display screen remains black, probably because the battery needs to be replaced.

This is a very frustrating situation for laptop users. They can only resolve it by applying techniques requiring them to investigate the cause of the problem and thus find a solution.

Why My Laptop Won’t Turn On But Power Light Is On?

There are various reasons why your laptop’s power light is on, but the screen won’t power up. A laptop may not turn on even as the power light may be due to a fault or low battery charge. In a few cases, your PC may not be connected to external devices properly, or it can be that you have to charge it when switched off.

8 Solutions For Why Laptop Won’t Turn On But Power Light Is On

1. Unplug Your Laptop

Disconnect or take out the battery, then press down the power button for 30 seconds. Detach and put back the memory module [s] and try to power it up. If the same doesn’t come up again, experiment with each module one by one in every socket till you detach the bad module or the faulty socket [change the mainboard in the case].

2. Detach External Devices

Switch off your PC and remove every external device connected to it, such as the USB, keyboard, and printer, or more, then reboot the system.

3. Try Another Screen Monitor On It

Firstly, you have to connect your PC to an external monitor by using an HDMI cable. If the external monitor works perfectly, it is most likely that the laptop screen is bad. You may need to click an “external monitor” button for it to come on.

This could be the button that has a two-monitor sign on it or the f4 button. If fine displays on the external monitor’s screen, the ribbon wire that connects it or the attached display are the issues.

If the external monitor doesn’t turn on at all or the external monitor remains black like the laptop screen, then the GPU or graphics card is likely the problem that may demand that you change the motherboard.

4. The AC Adapter

See if you can reconnect the AC adapter and confirm if the charging port is good. If the laptop turns ON with an AC adapter attached, then look up the status of the Adapter in the BIOS by taking these steps:

  • Switch off the system
  • Turn on the laptop, then immediately press the f2 button continually till the BIOS menu displays.

Bear in mind that the status of the AC adapter must state its type in BIOS. If the Adapter states Unknown or None, your PC will continue receiving power, but the battery won’t charge. Make sure the adapter cord is plugged in properly at both ends.

If your PC works as the adapter are plugged in, the battery is faulty or dead.

5. Refix The Battery

Before trying other steps, take out the battery and connect it again. This simple step can resolve your PC’s screen issue. See if you can also use the system on the battery alone. Make sure you don’t ON it when connected to a power source.

This will regain the normal state of the battery in no time, though it may not be complete but better than it was before. It depends on the kind of care you have given to it. You will be unlucky if the battery is fully damaged.

Your system can also be in a power state that doesn’t allow it to boot. Try disconnecting both the power cable and the battery for a minimum of one minute.

6. Check The Power Port For A Bent Pin

You will find a pin within the power port that fosters a solid connection to the AC adapter in a few laptops. If this pin is broken or malformed, your PC won’t receive any power. To resolve this issue, the power port of the system has to be changed or fixed.

Although, based on the laptop’s model, the solution might be to replace the entire motherboard.

7. Dusty Ram

Your dusty/unclean RAM can cause your laptop won’t turn on, but the power light is on. In this case, you can turn off your laptop and clean your RAM by opening the RAM slot at the backside of your laptop.

You’ll need an eraser and a screwdriver; in this way, you can remove the RAM connecting plate, clean it, and reinsert it into your laptop. Using this method, you get your laptop screen turned ON.

You can watch this short YouTube video which will guide you to clean your RAM connecting plate.

8. Remove CMOS Battery

If the previously explained method does not work, you can remove the CMOS battery and put it back in its place. This can help you get out of this issue, but if it does not, there’s something wrong with your motherboard.

FAQs

To resolve this issue, disconnect any peripheral devices attached to your PC. Kindly remove the battery and the adaptor, hold down the power button for 10 sec, plug the adaptor back and switch on the laptop.

This problem indicates your system’s hardware recognizes that it has power. The issue could be your laptop’s hardware, and when the PC has separate lamps for the battery and AC power, you can check either part. If the AC lamp comes on, but the battery doesn’t, the battery is faulty.

See if you can boot your Windows 10 in safe mode. It will only load the Windows 10 laptop with the essential services and drivers. The boot failure could be due to a driver issue.
