Tutorial

When it comes to their music library, Spotify has a ton of songs you can listen to, including ones with explicit content. The app shows you the songs depending on how the artist wants it to be.

However, not everyone is fond of songs with these uncensored lyrics. It might be due to personal reasons or the people around them which can hear the music.

Thankfully, you can always turn of the explicit content feature to prevent them from playing on the app. In this way youll skipp songs with uncensored lyrics and play clean ones exclusively.

With that in mind, we created a guide to help you toggle this option on your Playback Settings. Lets get started!

How to turn off the Allow explicit content filter on Spotify

If you want to look for clean songs on Spotify, you can choose to filter out the ones with explicit content. In this way, you cant access and play anything with the explicit tag on the app.

You can turn off the Allow explicit content filter whether youre using Spotify on your desktop or mobile device. Check our step-by-step tutorials below to learn how to toggle it from both.

On your computer:
  1. Launch the Spotify app on your desktop and sign in to your account.
  2. Click your display name or icon on the upper-right side of the screen and select Settings on the menu.

  3. Under the Playback section, toggle the Allow playback of explicit-rated content slider to turn it off.

After turning off the filter, you wont be able to access songs with the explicit tag. The app also restricts you from accessing or playing these songs, including the ones on your playlist.

On your mobile device:
  1. Launch the Spotify app from your home screen or app drawer and proceed to sign in with your account.
  2. Head to the Home tab and tap the gear icon on the upper-right to open your Settings page.

  3. Scroll down to the Playback section and toggle the Allow Explicit Content feature to turn it off.

Note: Filtering out explicit content doesnt work when youre using Spotify Connect to play music on other devices.

Always remember that turning off the explicit content feature only filters out songs with the E [explicit] tag. As such, it is worth noting that Spotify cant tag all explicit content since they depend on the information given to them by the right-holders.

You can also find clean songs on Spotify by searching for the name of the song and checking other versions without the explicit tag. However, please note that not all songs or albums on the app have alternative releases.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to filter out explicit content on Spotify, you can go ahead and play clean songs exclusively. With the help of this feature, you dont need to worry about explicit songs randomly playing on the app.
