It has been one year since the pandemic sucker-punched the globe. One year yet it feels like we never even left March 2020 with all the chaos and mayhem this past year slung our way. If we didnt know better, we would think that this reality was nothing more than the experimental plotline of a really twisted post-apocalyptic TV show but just the apocalypse part. We havent gotten to the post- yet, but in the meantime we can ready our survival tactics and prepare for the worst by binge-watching all the post-apocalyptic tv shows available out there.

Like everyone else who is embarking on a streaming journey, I launch the adventure on Netflix first. Thankfully, Netflix is prepared for this trend, providing a small-but-densely-packed menu of quality shows that cover almost every possible cause and effect of an apocalypse. Zombie aficionados will salivate when they see titles like The Walking Dead and Black Summer on the platform, while other sub-genre fans will have no trouble starting their survival research thanks to dystopian shows like The 100, Tribes of Europa, Into the Badlands and more.

There may not be many options to choose from when it comes to the post-apocalyptic subgenre on Netflix, but the options they do have are impressive enough to compensate. But to make your sifting even easier, we here at Decider have gone ahead and hand-picked the best of the best so you can feel even more prepared when we eventually exit this hellscape that is pandemic life.

So break out the notebooks and sharpen your machetes, here are the top 7 post-apocalyptic TV shows Netflix.

'The Walking Dead'

The Walking Dead is the godfather of all zombie apocalyptic television shows, and the series just keeps getting better and better. The hit AMC series centers on a group of human survivors living in a zombie-apocalyptic wasteland in search of a secure home. But as a world overrun by the living dead takes a toll on the few survivors, their interpersonal problems prove to be even greater threats to their continuing survival than the corpses hunting them outside. Throughout 11 seasons we have witnessed insane plot-twists, gruesome story arcs, and bloody zombie fight after bloody zombie fight; but somehow The Walking Dead always leaves us salivating for more.

'The 100'

This hit CW drama follows the adventures of the 100: a group of juvenile teens who are sent from their space-station society to live in exile on Earth, the planet which was destroyed years before by a nuclear war. Although it may appear cookie-cutter to the point of cliche on the outside, The 100 has defied expectations, becoming a hit YA dystopian series that boasts a dense and twist-fulled plot that boasts ample amounts of violence, sex, betrayal, and love. While The 100 ended its impressive run back in September, you can binge-watch all 7 seasons now on Netflix; and trust us, this a series that you will definitely be binge-watching!

'Into the Night'

Belgium made its Netflix-original debut with Into the Night, a sci-fi thriller series with the most bizarre-yet-coolest premise ever: the suns light has gone lethal. Inspired by the 2015 digital novel The Old Axolotl by acclaimed author Jacek Dukaj, this international binge is set in a world where the sun starts suddenly and mysteriously killing everything in its path. But as the sun leads this wake of insane destruction, one commercial airline flight filled with passengers finds themselves given a rare window of opportunity; so, despite the multiple language barriers, the group race against the sunrise in an attempt to survive. Featuring an all-star international cast including Laurent Capelluto [Black Spot], Jan Bijvoet [The Letter for the King], Astrid Whettnall [Close Enemies] and more, Into the Night is a deliciously-perplexing series that will leave you looking fearfully at the sun for days after watching.

'Neon Genesis Evangelion'

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the anime cult classic that tells the story of Shinji, a young boy who is recruited by his father to pilot a giant bio-mechanical suit called Evangelion. And because of his unique relationship with Evangelion, he is then forced fight and kill a group of humanoid creatures called Angels. While that premise may not seem that cult-worthy, what sets the series apart is how it is of the first anime series to honestly depict PTSD, depression, trauma; as well as one of the first shows to include a queer-coded main character. 'Black Summer'

If you like Black Mirrorthen you are going to love its zombie-apocalyptic cousin, Black Summer. This Netflix-original sci-fi anthology series explores what the world would look like post-zombie-apocalypse, but in an unprecedented, in-depth way. With episodes ranging from 20 minutes to almost an hour, each installment of the series focuses on a very specific challenge the apocalypse could pose through storylines that expand on factors like language barriers or rocky alliances in a way that has never been done in any zombie movie or show before. Taking something seemingly innocuous and picking it apart used to be just Black Mirrors game, but Black Summer is here to play now.
