The Blacklist season 1, episode 10 recap

“The Blacklist” has been on a thrill ride for most of the season, but on Monday the show managed to take things up another notch. There was not only an exciting “ending” to the Anslo Garrick story, but also the arrival of Fitch.

Who is this man? He is basically the person responsible for hiring Garrick in the first place, and capturing Reddington for the purpose of collecting information. Unfortunately for him, we don’t quite know what he really got out of this [if anything at all].  There was a tense negotiation, and then Reddington killed Garrick using one of his tricks. Now that he has escaped, the focus of the entire show has changed. We’re interested in finding out where Reddington is hiding, and whether or not Liz can find him while also uncovering a certain part of her past.

Speaking of the past, we “learned” something at the end of the episode … Red is not her father. It made total sense for her to ask the question, given that this man is strangely invested in her. Red could be lying, though, and that is something that we’ll have to wait to have some sort of answer to until January when the show returns.

On a different note, we had Tom actually acting like a rational human being for a change rather than the world’s biggest creep. He tried to warn Liz a hundred times over to leave this terrible place, which is what basically everyone would do in this situation. But given that we’re only at episode 10 here, we imagine that this will last for quite a long time still. But, Red also warned her to be cognizant of who this man really is … and that he is still up to not good.

We can’t say enough about how this was a great way to cap off the fall season. “The Blacklist” has secured its place as the best new network show of the season, and while we know that every episode isn’t quite this good or this serialized, we sure wish that it was. Grade: A.

Anslo Garrick [No. 16] Conclusion provides examples of:

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Reddington's mercenaries easily destroy the surveillance outpost, and the FBI reinforcements overwhelm Garrick's mercenaries by surprise.
  • Hired Guns: Anslo Garrick's “The Wild Bunch” returns in this episode and are revealed to have been hired by Alan Fitch and his organization.
  • The Man Behind the Man: As sinister as Anslo Garrick is, he turns out to be operating on orders from Fitch.
  • No Plans, No Prototype, No Backup: As valuable as Reddington is, there is only one tracer implanted in him which is pulled out quickly by Anslo Gerrick’s team. You would think they'd put a half dozen tracers in Reddington so you couldn't remove all of them before the cavalry showed up.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: The end of the episode has Reddington wearing a hoodie and getting on a bus. Considering he spent the entire season in expensive tailored suits and traveling by private plane, this tells the viewer that he really doesn't want to be found.
  • Wham Episode: NBC's official tumblr for the show promised that "Anslo Garrick" would be this. They weren't lying. After the two-parter finished, "everything has changed
". Reddington is in the wind, he's explicitly denied being Liz's father, his people don't know where he is, and the Blacklist task force's only motivation is hunting him down. Also, Liz learned about the guys who were spying on her, there's hints that Reddington is involved in some sort of high level government conspiracy. Oh, and there's a mole on the team.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: After Reddington has been tortured, Anslo Gerrick lets his guard down and leans in close enough for Reddington to kill him.

The conclusion of the two-part mid-season finale picked up right where last week's episode left off. A shot rang out. Did Dembe get killed? No, he didn't. It was Aram. He shot one of Anslo's guys who had Liz at gunpoint. With communications back up, they sent out a message for help before they were captured and brought before Anslo.

When Liz showed up everything changed. Red immediately forced Ressler to give up the code to open the box and he did so willingly to protect Liz. That was signal to Anslo that Liz was important to Red, so he took both of them with him. They escaped through a tunnel to an ambulance.

Anslo wanted the tracker removed from Red first. While that was being done, Liz used the defibrillator to take out one guy and used his gun to kill the driver. She jumped out of the ambulance and got into a car to chase them. She lost Red when his tracker was removed. He was taken to a warehouse to be interrogated.

Anslo gave him a drug to cause him more pain, but it didn't work. It turned out that Anslo wasn't the one after Red, he was just hired to find him and bring him to the warehouse. Another man wanted to speak to him about breaking their arrangement. Red knows a secret and agreed to keep it such. His deal with FBI threatened this other deal. And, somehow it involves Liz.

Liz and Aram looked into the mole and found calls were being made between the Post Office and the house across the street. Liz found the Apple Man and killed him when he attacked her. They found the surveillance. Liz contacted Red's Mr. Kaplan for help. He ended up being a woman.

Using the Apple Man's GPS, they located a tech center being used by the group following Red. The information showed they were also following members of the task force. They tracked Red's location but he was gone by the time they found him.

Ressler survived his shooting and his ex-fiancee showed up. She's engaged to someone else now.

Liz got a call from Red. She asked if he was her father and he said no. And then he warned her to be careful of her husband. Tom wants Liz to quit her job and move away with him.

The task force has shifted its focus to search for Red.
