Desktop Window Manager high GPU OBS

For some reason, when I load up OBS studio to get ready for a recording or stream, I see in Task Manager that I have OBS and Desktop Window Manager taking up around 30% of my GPU (combined). This is just running OBS and nothing else. However, when I load up certain games, like Halo infinite, Forza, or any other graphically decent games and press on the streaming or recording button in OBS, my DWM and OBS shoot up to around 40% usage EACH, leaving only little room in my GPU for the game or other programs I need to run. I don't have too much going on at all in the scenes I am trying to run, I jus

OS: Windows 11. Windows version: 21H2. Windows Build: 22000.282 (An Insider build). I'll start with the issue first, then I'll do a backstory and Q/A section to get most common questions out of the way to reduce time. Issue: In Windows 11, only when playing a game, my performance drops and Task Manager shows my GPU being maxed out by Desktop Window Manager (DWM). When I open Process Explorer to investigate further, it shows DWM not using any GPU, but rather System Idle Process being the leading offender, using a gigantic 78% GPU. In Windows 10, the issue would not go away until I rebooted. In Windows 11, however, it shows my PC acting normal once I close the game the issue started on. Backstory: This issue started when I was on Windows 10, a few months before I switched over to Windows 11. After it had started, I tried what I could. Nothing too technical, just normal troubleshooting techniques like rebooting, reinstalling/updating drivers, installing Windows updates, etc. Out of the methods I tried, rebooting remained the only method I found to work temporarily until the problem happened again. Nothing comes to mind when I think of installing/updating something that could have forced this issue to start. Q/A. Q: How old is your machine? A: 2 years old. Q: Have you monitored your temperatures whilst gaming/idle ensure you're not overheating? A: Yes. My CPU under an extreme stress test with OCCT was a little hot, so I cleaned my PC and moved it to a cooler section of my room. GPU is fine temperature wise. Q: Did this issue happen when you were on a non-insider build? A: Yes. Q: Is Windows on an SSD? A: Yes. Q: Are your drivers up to date? A: I believe so. I used Snappy Driver Installer to get most of them, then Windows' optional update feature to finish any others. Q: Is your game up to date? A: Yes. Q: How does the issue happen? A: In Windows 10, it mainly happened from alt-tabbing. In Windows 11, I'm unsure. It mainly seems to happen when I'm playing Gears 5. That could be because I alt-tab from that game a lot, though. Q: Have you checked your machine for malware? A: Yes. Q: Does the issue happen when you're not playing a game? A: No. Not yet, at least. Q: Is this a fresh install of Windows or did you install keeping user documents and content? A: Fresh install. I formatted my driver before installing. Q: Do you have most of the same applications/services on Windows 11 that you did on 10? A: Mostly, yes. Q: Have you tried safe mode?

A: No. My games can't launch in safe mode nor can I force the issue to show itself so I can test it.

Since you have not mentioned the make and manufacturer of the monitor.. I am answering this on an assumption that if you do have HDR enabled then try turning it off inside the windows color portion of the Display Settings and then see and report if the usage goes down or not

All my specs I could find are now updated to their manufacturer name so there is no more guessing.

I do not have HDR.

Try this only.

Open Nvidia Control Panel - manage 3d settings - program settings - look for DWM.exe and change power management mode to Optimal power.

It didn't work. I wouldn't mind this issue if it didn't degrade my performance. DWM's GPU usage is fluctuating between 15-50% constantly. It's not a steady usage. On top of all this, if I try to type in a browser/Discord I can see the letters lagging as I type as if my PC is at 100% usage.

I was thinking maybe Windows is bugging with Gears 5 and is showing DWM using my GPU when it's in fact Gears 5, but that doesn't explain the fluctuation nor the performance degrade.

I have, yes. I don't think it's Gears 5, though, as I'm active on their forums and I don't see anyone talking about this particular issue.

EDIT: This is what I see within Task Manager:

I have not, no. I assumed it wouldn't work as all the other threads I have found online with my exact issue have tried that suggestion and it hasn't worked. When I installed Windows 11 over a week ago, it had no NVIDIA driver. I had a complete fresh install when I installed the latest driver.

EDIT: It's now at near 100% utilization, and my PC is gasping for air, lagging at nearly everything I do.

This is an example of what happens with DWM; it shows all other programs utilizing my GPU using much more than they normally do. OBS was using 11% in my last image, now it's using 37%.

Your problem is related to hardware because it still occus in win10 and win11. Try this first.

Update BIOS and dont use snappy driver to update drivers. Install drivers from manufacture website

I don't know if deleting/installing all my drivers would help as others have had this issue with different devices/drivers.

I mainly don't want to manually find/download all my drivers.

GPU drivers from Nvidia rest from Asrock. As I have OBS Studio and a GTX1080TI have had a look, you clearly have a problem.
