I’m not sure how widespread this problem is, but I’ve seen it a few times, and one of my work colleagues gets it regularly:

• You’re happily working in a Word document, saving as you go, when all of a sudden you can’t save as you get a message that the document is set to ‘read-only’
• You save and close a Word document, re-open it, work on it, try to save it again but get the ‘read-only’ message.

The workaround I’ve used to date has been to do a ‘save as’ and save the document with a slightly different file name.

However, after my colleague said that she’s getting the message all the time on a specific document, it was time for me to go off to Google and check if anyone else gets this and how they solved it.

Mở file Word báo Read Only nghĩa là file Word đó chỉ cho phép người dùng đọc, để xem chứ bạn không thể chỉnh sửa được nội dung của file. Nguyên nhân 1: Do thiết lập Protected View

Nếu gặp phải tình trạng này thì cách xử lý khá là đơn giản. Bạn chỉ cần vào File -> chọn Option

Sau đó chọn Trust Center -> chọn Trust Center Setting -> chọn Protected View -> rồi bỏ dấu check ở 3 ô như mô tả trong ảnh dưới -> rồi nhấn OK để lưu lại là được.

Nguyên nhân 2: Do bị phân quyền read only của file

Trong nguyên nhân này thường do file Word bị người dùng phân quyền chỉ đọc của file hoặc thư mục để hạn chế chỉnh sửa.

Cách xử lý cũng khá đơn giản. Bạn chỉ cần nhấn chuột phải vào file Word -> chọn Properties -> rồi bỏ tick chọn trong phần Read-only -> rồi chọn OK là sẽ khắc phục được lỗi này.

Còn nếu mở file Word mà có thông báo Protected view như hình dưới thì cũng tương tự như chế độ Read-only là bạn chỉ xem chứ không chỉnh sửa được. Đây là chế độ giúp máy tính của bạn mở file an toàn, do đó cách xử lý đơn giản là bạn chỉ cần nhấn chọn vào Enable Editing là sẽ chỉnh sửa được.

Nguyên nhân 3: Máy tính nhiễm virus làm thay đổi thuộc tính file Word

Nếu máy tính bị nhiễm virus có thể làm thay đổi thuộc tính read-only của file, và khi đó bạn sẽ không thể bỏ check ở phần này như cách thực hiện trong Nguyên nhân 2 được do virus đã ẩn mất mục này rồi.

Để khắc phục thì bạn cần dùng phần mềm để phục hồi lại file hoặc sử dụng một phần mềm diệt virus 2019 tốt nhất để quét, xử lý virus và khôi phục lại thuộc tính của file sẽ khắc phục được.

Microsoft Word, by default, opens the documents downloaded from the internet in Read-Only mode for added security reasons. Other times, it can be due to the document owner adding edit restrictions to the document to be used in read-only mode to prevent modifications.

In any case, you can change the edit restrictions in Microsoft Word to stop the documents from opening in read-only mode. Here we show you how to disable document protection, change file attributes and turn off the built-in safety features to remove the read-only status on MS Word documents.

1. Disable Read-Only Mode in File Properties

In Windows, you can mark files as read-only to discourage other users from modifying the original content of the file. If the read-only file attribute is turned on, you can open and read the file but cannot delete, overwrite or edit the original content.

If your document opens in read-only mode, check the file properties and turn off the read-only mode file attribute to allow modifications in MS Word.

1. Right-click on the file you want to change file attributes for and select Properties.
2. In the Properties window, open the General tab.
3. In the Attributes section, uncheck the Read-only option.
4. Click Apply and OK to save the changes.
5. Now the document will not open in read-only mode in MS Word.

2. Turn Off Edit Restrictions for Microsoft Word Documents

Document owners can use the built-in Restrict Editing feature in Microsoft Word to prevent unauthorized users from making unintended modifications. The Restrict Editing mode uses password or user authentication as the file protection method.

So, if there is a file restriction, you will need to have access to the password or be an authenticated owner to remove the editing restrictions.

To remove Editing Restrictions for a Word document:

1. Open the read-only document in MS Word.
2. Next, open the Review at the top.
3. In the Protect section, click on Restrict Editing.
4. In the right pane, click the Stop Protection button.
5. If the document is password protected, it will ask you to enter the password. Punch in the password and click OK.

That should remove all the editing restrictions and allow you to modify the Word document.

3. Turn Off Protected View for Word

Protected View is part of Microsoft’s Trust Center, where you can manage the security and privacy settings for the Microsoft Office programs. When enabled, Protected View opens documents in read-only mode and disables most editing functions.

MS Word, by default, uses Protected View to protect the user from malicious internet files disguised as genuine Word documents. However, if you trust the read-only document to be genuine, you can disable Protected View temporarily in MS Word to edit your document.

To disable Protected View in MS Word:

1. Open the MS Word program.
2. Click on File and then select Options.
3. It will open the Word Options window. In the left pane, open the Trust Center tab.
4. Next, click on Trust Center Settings under the Microsoft Word Trust Center section.
5. In the left pane, click on the Protected View tab.
6. In the right pane, uncheck the following options: Enable Protected View for files originating from the internet, followed by Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations, and then Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments
7. Click OK to save the changes and open the Word document. It will now open without any restrictions.

4. Turn Off "Open E-mail Attachments in Reading View"

You can configure MS Word's startup options to open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view. This is a security feature to help prevent malicious email attachments and other documents that originated from the internet from infecting your computer.

However, it can also prevent you from editing legitimate documents by opening them in read-only mode. Try to disable this option to see if that helps you resolve the problem.

1. Launch the MS Word program on your PC.
2. Click on File and select Options.
3. In the General tab, scroll down to Start up options.
4. Next, uncheck the Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in the reading view option.
5. Click OK to save the changes.
6. If you open an attachment file in MS Word, it should now open in default mode.

5. Disable the Preview Pane in File Explorer

When enabled, the Preview pane shows the preview of your selected files in File Explorer. However, to do so, File Explorer may end up locking your file resulting in read-only mode in MS Word.

Try turning off the Preview pane in File Explorer to fix the problem.

Disable Preview pane in Windows 11:

1. Press Win + E to open File Explorer.
2. In File Explorer, click the View drop-down.
3. Then, go to Show and unselect Preview pane.

Disable Preview pane in Windows 10:

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Next, open the View tab at the top of your screen.
3. Click on the Preview pane to disable the option.

6. Check If Your Antivirus Is Blocking Documents

Similar to MS Word, third-party antivirus includes built-in safety features to stop users from opening potentially dangerous files downloaded from the Internet.

However, your antivirus can also block genuine files and prevent them from opening default mode in MS Word. If you have a third-party antivirus, check if it is causing Word files to open in read-only mode.

You can disable your antivirus temporarily to determine if it is causing the issue. Once disabled, open the Word file and check if it opens in default mode with editing privileges.

If so, check your antivirus program for application or process exclusion settings, including the Ransomware shield setting. If the issue persists, consider switching to less intrusive antivirus software.

7. Online Repair Your Microsoft Office App

MS Office features a built-in repair option to fix issues that may be preventing the program from working correctly. If you determine the problem to have occurred due to a software glitch, run the repair tool to fix any issues with the app.

1. Press Win + R to open Run.
2. Type control and click OK to open Control Panel.
3. In Control Panel, go to Programs > Programs and Features.
4. Select the Microsoft Office app from the list and click Change. Click Yes when prompted by User Account Control.
5. Select Online Repair and click the Repair button. This requires an active Internet connection to download necessary Office files and fix any issues.
6. Click Repair once more to confirm the action. The repair process may take some time, so wait until complete.
7. Once done, restart your PC and check for any improvements.

Fix Microsoft Word Opening Documents in Read-Only Mode
