Is Honda making a 2023?

New details have been confirmed about the upcoming Civic Type R FL5, and it seems that Honda's pulling out all the stops in the power department.

Last July, the Japanese carmaker unveiled the latest Civic Type R for the first time, but held back on sharing much of the technical details. Now, however, the cat's out of the bag. According to Honda, the upcoming CTR will produce 315 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. The K20C1 turbocharged inline-four engine producing all of this power will be built in Honda's Anna Engine Plant in Sidney, Ohio, USA.

But wait a minute, you might ask. Isn't the outgoing Civic Type R FK8 already producing similar horsepower figures? That is true, but bear in mind that this is the American specification, and the final power output destined for other markets around the world is set to be even higher.

According to a leaked Japanese official brochure that's been making its way around online, the JDM variant will be blessed with 326 horses and 420 Nm of torque from the same K20C1 heart.

Power figures are just the tip of the iceberg with this latest and greatest Type R. Its wheelbase has been extended by 35.5 mm, bringing the final figure to 2,736 mm.

Additionally, Honda has made it 20.3 mm longer, 12.7 mm lower, and 15.2 mm wider than the standard Civic, sitting on lightweight 19-inch matte black alloy wheels wrapped in wide bespoke 265/30 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

The Civic Type R also stands to gain from wider tracks front and rear (increased by 25.4 mm and 10.2 mm respectively), and a retuned dual-axis strut front and multilink rear suspension, allowing for improved straight-line stability and steering feel.

A high-strength six-speed gearbox allows the driver to row through the cogs with confidence, especially with a lighter flywheel and a revised rev-match system complementing it. On top of that, the Type R is equipped with a standard helical-type limited-slip differential.

Inside, the Civic Type R sports a 9.0-inch colour infotainment display, which is said to be the largest touchscreen in the Type R ever. For added convenience, it is also compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Honda's also given the range-topping Civic an enhanced version of Honda's LogR Performance Datalogger, which no longer requires a smartphone app. Drivers can utilise the on-board system to record performance parameters in real-time with the LogR datalogger, such as using the stopwatch function to record lap times, a tire friction circle in 3D motion that displays the maximum tire force the vehicle can achieve, and an innovative scoring function that helps drivers improve their skills on the track.

Honda Sensing also comes as standard, providing an entire suite of active safety features. This includes Short Distance Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) and Lane Keep Assist (LKAS).
