It is/was + tính từ + that...should

A. that... should có thểđược dùng sau it is/was advisable, better, desirable, essential, imperative, important, natural necessary sau fair, just, right những từ này thường có only đi trước, và sau reasonable, thay cho for + cấu trúc nguyên mẫu.

It is advisable that everyone should have a map.

(Điều cầnthiếtlà mỗi người nên có một bảnđồ)

It is better for him to hear it from you.

(Tốthơnlà anh ta nên nghe điềuđó từ phía anh.)

It is essential for him to be prepared for this.

It is essential that he should be prepared for this.

(Anh ta cầnphải được chuẩn bị trước.)

It is only right that she should have a share.

(Điềuduy nhất đúng là cô ta phải được chia một phần.)

Đôi khi should bị lược bỏ khi dùng trước be:

­lt is essential that he be prepared (Anh ta cần phải được chuẩn bị trước.)

B. that... should có thểđược dùng sau it is/was absurd, amazing, annoying, ludicrous, odd, ridiculous, strange, surprising và các tính từ tương tự thay cho that + hiện tại/quá khứ.

It is ridiculous that we should be ( = that we are) short of water ill a country where it is always raining (Thật tức cười, ởmột nước luônluôn có mưa như vậy mà chúng ta bị thiếu nước.)

Đôi khi thể nguyên mẫu hoàn thành được dùngnói vềcác sự việc quá khứ :
