It’s no secret that I am a Kilian fan. I have reviewed quite a few of them on here, and there will likely be even more in the future. Vodka on the Rocks is one that I enjoyed, but I didn’t fully understand it until recently.

Sometimes, I test fragrances quickly to see if they are worth reviewing. Admittedly, only wearing a fragrance twice can sometimes make me miss some gems, but there is no need to fully test something for a whole week if you doubt you will review it, so I am sometimes left with little choice. Do you think Kilian Vodka on the Rocks was worth my time, or did I discover that it’s a flop in an otherwise great catalog?

The Scent:

Vodka has never really been a boozy smell that I gravitated towards. I am much more partial to brown liquors such as rum and whiskey. This may have given me a predisposition of this scent that was unfair to the fragrance and the house of Kilian, who is a master of booze-fueled scents, in my opinion.

Vodka on the Rocks starts with a cooling feeling from aldehydes and coriander, with a slight touch of cardamom. However, this isn’t a warm and spicy cardamom, it feels as if it’s frozen and almost muted, but somehow still present.

The heart consists of soft rose, delicately floral with a touch of powder. The bitter and almost astringent taste of raw rhubarb wafts in with a vague sparkle of citrus.

The base doesn’t change too much, but it becomes a bit soapier from ambroxan, but it’s not the ambery type that feels like a shower gel. This one feels slightly salty, airy, and more akin to a cleaned-up version of ambergris with a bit of laundry detergent.

The Performance:

Fresh fragrances aren’t known for their longevity, but I get around 7 hours with Vodka on the Rocks. However, it only projects strongly for around an hour and leaves a pleasant sillage trail for a few hours after that. This is not a performance beast, but I don’t mind that at all.

The Wearability:

The offering from the Parisian house trends slightly masculine, but not so much that a woman couldn’t wear it. It’s a very clean scent, and that can be pulled off by anyone of any age demographic.

Vodka on the Rocks is best for warmer weather. It has a cool freshness to it, but it can be worn in any season. It’s a more casual scent, but I think the cleanliness in it could allow it to be at least semi-formal.

My Verdict:

First off, let’s tackle the public opinion that this is a clone of Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce. It’s not, and it never was. If I had a dime for every time someone compared scents that don’t smell alike and dubbed them as “clones”, then I would be a wealthy man. Vodka on the Rocks is an icy cool scent with soft spices and class. Fierce is a teenager’s shower gel scent. There is nothing wrong with Fierce, but these scents are totally different.

In regard to it smelling like Percival, it might for the first few minutes in the opening, then it goes in an entirely different direction. Percival is a niche version of Fierce, and both have little resemblance to the Kilian. Kilian has never been, and never will be, a clone house.

Kilian himself has spoken against cloning on multiple occasions. He won’t do it, and he hasn’t yet. If people smell fragrances past the slight similarities in the opening, they will realize that the scents are uniquely different.

As far as the scent goes, it gets a pass from me. While it is not my absolute favorite in the Kilian catalog, it’s one that I plan to pick up this summer. The smell makes me think of Mykonos with shades of azure blue and white. It’s a beautiful fresh fragrance that is quite versatile and slightly seductive, which I call the “Kilian suave”.

I would suggest sampling it first. It is a mass-appealing fragrance, but it may not be to everyone’s liking since it doesn’t actually smell like vodka. It instead opts for the feeling of it in a chilling manner. It’s a fragrance worth owning to me.
