When World War I ended in 1918, there was an emphasis on economic democracy and freedom, which sparked a major labor rebellion in 1919 and 1920, respectively. Around 365,000 mainly immigrant workers gathered in Chicago to demand greater salaries, union recognition, and an eight-hour workday during the strike (Foner, 2020).
