Report

The Farmers’ Almanac has released its 2022-2023 extended winter outlook. MoCo and almost all of Maryland seem to fall under the “Significant Shivers, Slushy, Icy, Snowy” category. Just to our south and west is the “Unreasonably Cold, Snowy” category, which means that we may have a good amount of winter precipitation for the first time in a few years, according to the forecast.

“The Farmers’ Almanac suggests a stormy winter in on schedule especially for the eastern half of the country. For some areas this may mean snow, but for others it will result in more slush and mush.”

We asked our resident snow forecaster, MoCoSnow, what this means. “This is the first time in a while they’re predicting a lot of winter precipitation. They usually play it safe for our area, so I’m excited to see how this turns out.” he said. All in all, it’s a forecast that allows you to have a little fun as we move into the middle of fall and start to prepare for chillier temperatures. Only time will tell if the farmers’ 2022-2023 Winter Outlook will hold true.

Always timely, topical, and distinctively “useful, with a pleasant degree of humor,” the Almanac is consulted daily throughout the year by users from all walks of life.

The 2023 edition contains the fun facts, predictions, and feature items that have made it a cultural icon: traditionally 80 percent–accurate weather forecasts; notable astronomical events and time-honored astrological dates; horticultural, culinary, fashion, and other trends; historical hallmarks; best fishing days; time- and money-saving garden advice; recipes for delicious dishes; facts on folklore, farmers, home remedies, and husbandry; amusements and contests; plus too much more to mention—all in the inimitable Almanac style that has charmed and educated readers since 1792.

How accurate is the farmers Almanac?

The almanacs say they can predict weather with around 80 percent accuracy, but a University of Illinois study disagreed, saying the Almanac was only about 52 percent accurate—which is essentially random chance.

Will 2022 be a rough winter?

AccuWeather is predicting that a large portion of the country will experience below-normal snowfall. AccuWeather's official 2022-2023 U.S. winter forecast is rather bleak for snow lovers.

Will there be an El Nino in 2023?

However, as the 3rd year of La Nina continues, Climate Impact Company is forecasting El Nino to form later in 2023. By early next year, the very warm SSTA pattern enhanced by the negative Indian Ocean Dipole (-IOD) in the far eastern equatorial Indian Ocean will fade.

Are we going to have a very cold winter?

Winter will be warmer than normal, with above-normal precipitation. The coldest periods will be in late November, mid- and late December, and mid- January. Snowfall will be below normal in most areas that normally receive snow, with the snowiest periods in early to mid-January and early February.
